Deformation and Movement Monitoring
Watching what moves, by how much, and when - so decisions about safety and remediation are based on evidence, not instinct.
What is Deformation and Movement Monitoring?
Deformation and movement monitoring is the measured observation of whether something is moving, by how much, in what direction and how quickly.
A baseline survey is carried out first, then the same fixed points, faces or levels are remeasured over time to detect settlement, heave, tilt, bulging, cracking, twist or other structural change.
This service is used when there is a real need to replace guesswork with evidence — whether that is an excavation beside an existing property, a retaining wall showing signs of movement, a floor slab that must be checked for level change, or a new structure being watched while adjacent works are ongoing.
The key value is early warning: instead of reacting after visible damage appears, the project team gets trend data it can act on sooner.
Applications
- Monitoring retaining walls, façades and boundary structures
- Tracking floor slabs, beam levels and structural frame movement
- Watching adjacent buildings during nearby construction works
- Settlement and levelling surveys for suspected ground movement
- Checking embankments, hardstanding and landscaped features over time
Benefits
- Provides early warning before movement becomes a bigger cost issue
- Improves site safety and supports fact-based decisions
- Helps engineers target remediation only where it is needed
- Creates a defensible record for clients, designers, insurers and contractors
- Reduces uncertainty on sensitive or high-risk sites
Deliverables
- Baseline survey and monitoring strategy input
- Permanent markers or monitoring targets where required
- Repeat survey rounds to agreed intervals
- Movement tables, graphs and trend commentary
- 2D or 3D comparison drawings, contours and overlays
- Exception reporting where tolerances or trigger levels are exceeded
Why Choose Powers?
We combine precise site control, reflectorless and conventional measurements, and clear reporting that non-surveyors can actually use.
We are experienced in monitoring walls, floors, steelwork and buildings, and understand that the result needs to support decisions on programme, safety and remedial action, not just sit in a spreadsheet.
