What is a Type A Verification Survey?
A PAS 128 Type A survey verifies the precise position and depth of underground utilities through physical exposure, usually by vacuum excavation. This level of survey provides the highest confidence in utility location by confirming findings from earlier detection surveys.
Type A verification is most valuable where the consequences of a strike are high – where a service controls foundation locations, deep excavation or major plant movements, physical verification removes ambiguity.
Desktop utility records (statutory plans) often show services in the wrong position and cannot be relied upon for accurately locating underground services. Detecting first, then exposing, is always the safer approach.
