What are Survey Control Networks?

A survey control network is the framework of permanent or semi-permanent reference points that every other site engineering task is tied back to.

Each control point has known coordinates and levels, allowing all setting out, as-built work, monitoring and machine control to use the same grid and datum. This is the project’s single version of truth.

Good control is set early, checked properly and protected from disturbance. On larger or longer-running sites, that usually means primary control outside the active works and secondary control around the live construction area so instruments can be set up quickly and accurately. Without this foundation, different contractors can end up working to different grids – which is when mistakes become expensive.
